Being different from others is always a condition that demands some attitude to deal with. Different people find unique solutions to this problem. In his story I Like Guys, David Sedaris describes the approach that has helped him to survive as a homosexual among his heterosexual environment. In particular, he learned how to laugh at it. His mocking tone is quite different from the other authors who write about being different. In particular, D.Winston Brown demonstrates rebellion to racial prejudice in his story ‘Ghost Children. When he writes about the injustice done to African Americans, he shows his resentment and a desire for revenge. Meanwhile, Stephen Elliot chooses indifferent tone in his story Where I Slept. It seems as if he put up with being homeless and he did not care about it.
Sedaris use of irony draws reader’s attention and helps extend deeper levels of meaning in the text. Irony is a useful device to say something positive, but to mean the negative and vice versa. For example, the author writes about the word ]faggot’ that is constantly has a negative connotation. Sedaris use of the word is different, We used it as a joke, an accusation, and finally as a dare. In such a way, he explains that faggot was not negative but positive. In addition, the author uses sarcasm to incite laughter from the readers. In particular, Sedaris writes, had there been a walking specialist, we probably would have met there, too . It means that homosexuals have complex treatment of their disease. I read the ending of the story uplifting, because it shows that the protagonist remains unpunished for being different. It looks like his victory over the society that persecutes and punishes those who are different. Thus, mocking normal people appears to be a successful counterstrategy in dealing with the issue.
